Involving patients in producing information

The views of the St. Mary’s Colorectal Cancer Services patient user group are sought on all patient questionnaires and information leaflets. The clinical nurse specialist takes them to the relevant clinicians’ and managers’ meetings, where they are discussed and problems thrashed out. A detailed report of the resultant action is taken back to the group. Nothing is ignored.

The Group were asked for their comments on a list of questions about colonoscopy for a research project for junior doctors, who have to explain the procedure to patients. They were also given a draft of the new Patient Self-Assessment form for comment. Views from the users were also sought on a new clinic letter with details of suppository self-administration and a discharge check-list.

Treatment is evolving so rapidly and radically that the experience of newcomers is often very different from that of the original group. For instance, the Patient Information leaflets for stoma reversal are now out of date, because a different method is used – a subject upon which the present group cannot possibly comment. The hospital does need constant feedback on whatever is the current treatment or service provision.
