Involving patients: a ward’s philosophy statement

“We wondered if patients want and need the things we think they need.”

Last year the staff on a specialist thoracic ward wrote a ward philosophy – a one-page statement of the values they hold as a ward team. The philosophy is up on the walls and a copy is put in every patient’s information folder. This year they are asking patients for their comments and ideas, and will incorporate these into the philosophy.
