What do we have to do?

How long does it take?

Do we have to go it alone?

How are we assessed?

Can this help us get another quality award?

But we’ve already got a quality award!

How much does it cost?

How long does the award last?

What do we have to do?

The whole staff team in a practice or department needs to work together to

  • reflect on what they do already to meet the assessment criteria
  • think through what issues need to be addressed and changes made to truly involve and build partnerships with patients.

There is no right or one way for a department or practice to demonstrate that it meets the criteria, it will depend on the needs of the people it serves.

Examples of how others have demonstrated their patient friendliness are in the box to the right hand side of each criteria section.

The first step is for the health care team to meet the Patient Friendly Level One Criteria which gives them the status of ‘working towards patient friendly accreditation' and allows them to display certificates demonstrating their commitment to staff and patients.

The team will have access to a password only access area of our website where they can build their assessment portfolio. Our team of assessors will provide feedback on their entries.

The team then needs to provide evidence that they meet the rest of the 4Ps patient and public involvement criteria.

How long does it take?

This will depend on the circumstances of each health care team and whether they choose to attend a 4Ps programme or use the support services of 4Ps.

As soon as a team starts filling in its portfolio it is working towards Patient Friendly Recognition.

Do we have to go it alone?

People on 4Ps programmes have access to trained and accredited facilitators and assessors who are part of a network of individuals willing to share what has and hasn't worked for them.

You may choose to

before they start filling in their portfolio.

How are we assessed?

A team of accredited Patient Friendly representatives examine qualitative evidence of patient involvement, partnership and satisfaction.

Can this help us get another quality award?

Yes. The assessment criteria link with best practice, the local clinical governance framework and current legislative requirements and are complementary to other quality schemes.

But we’ve already got a quality award!

The scheme is neither an alternative nor an ‘add on’ to existing quality schemes.

Holding another quality award will not automatically confer the status of 4Ps Patient Friendly Recognition but a team may draw on their experience of any quality scheme to support their application.

How long does the award last?

4Ps Patient Friendly Recognition works within a framework of continual monitoring and evaluation.

The award is reassessed after the first year and then within a time frame of three years thereafter.
