Gay Men's Service Team - Summer BBQ, information service awareness Jonathan Whitehouse - GMST Project coordinator - 020 8509 3440 - Email: jonathan.whitehouse@positiveeast.org.uk  Jonathan Whitehouse - GMST Project coordinator  07 August 2006
LEAN (London East Aids Network) and The Globe Centre merged as Positive East in early spring 2005. As part of the relaunch programme to highlight existing/future services and raise local awareness, a community information-share exercise was held by the Gay Men's Service Team, namely a summer barbeque.

The aim of the event was to:
1. Inform and raise local community awareness of Positive East Gay Men’s Service Team (GMST) by highlighting existing/forthcoming events, groups, services and opportunities in GMST and Positive East.

2. Involve cross-agencies as part of the activity, again to inform and raise their awareness as to existing Positive East and GMST support groups.

3. Provide an opportunity to exhibit ‘Workshop on Thursday’ activities (Positive East service user arts-related activities), by including performances and reading as part of the bbq. This not only promoted awareness of Workshop on Thursday's programme of activities, but also to provide a forum where the workshop members were able to show their achievements and outputs.

4. Provide a non-sexual social environment where by service users could chat and meet in a friendly, open and non-threatening environment.

5. Ensure that the address data for gay men service users were updated, and new service users the opportunity to be included as part of future mailshots as to support groups and proposed activities.

The Summer barbeque (bbq) took place at Positive East Stepney Centre garden on Thursday, 1st September 2005, running from 16:00 – 20:00, with food available 17:00 – 19:00. To encourage as wide as possible local community involvement, the event was open to all Positive East service users, as well as partner their friends and Positive East personnel.

Approximately 1270+ invites were posted out to local community service users and local groups, including east London support agencies, PCT and trust members. The invite also included summary update of GMST programme of activities during the remainder of 2005, highlighting new initiatives, such as the telephone Helpline - Signpost.

Over 71 attended, the majority being service users, producing a 5% response attendance rate. Feedback forms from the service users who attended the event were all very positive, with many recommendations of future similar events to be held.

As a result of the BBQ 20 service users took the opportunity to request follow up details regarding GMST/Positive East services and it also brought about an increased awareness with service users of GMST team members and current/future programmes including the forthcoming telephone helpline.
Leaflet /resource design David McMaster  David McMaster  20 April 2006
Service users are regularly involved in the design/content of leaflets and resources, both for within the organisation and externally.
• leaflets advertising groups Positive Life, HIMAT and Beau Belles – service users co-designed and wrote text
• service users provided focus group for an oral health leaflet aimed at people living with HIV being developed by THPCT
• feedback to Barts about content of letter for patients informing them of change in dispensing of medication at pharmacy

Multi-media David McMaster  David McMaster  05 June 2006
• A guide to the services at Positive East was printed and distributed which informed service users about what was available across our 4 locations
• We have 2 websites (www.positiveeast.org.uk and www.gaymenswellbeing.com ) where we place information about our services. The design of one of these sites is undertaken by a volunteer service user.
• We are also in the process of developing an organisation-wide email distribution list making for more effective sharing of information and news
• One of our groups has started to create its own newsletter about issues that are relevant to them.
• We have printed a newsletter which has been made available to all service users, via reception areas at each centre and through group meetings.
Client files and letters David McMaster  David McMaster  20 April 2006
Some clients have concerns around information sharing with other health professionals and offering a copy of the letter can often reduce these anxieties. It is not routine with every appointment or session but if the client requests it and it is beneficial for them letters are copied to them. Clients are also able to view their files if they wish.

It can sometimes be useful to write to clients after an appointment or phone call so they have a reminder of what was discussed and agreed and passing on information that might not have been available at the time.
Web-based noticeboard David McMaster  David McMaster  08 August 2006
We have created a web-based noticeboard where we post the latest news about Positive East, its services and what is happening with the organisation to keep service users and visitors up to date.
