Positive East has a mission statement'improving the quality of life for individuals and communities affacted by HIV in East London'. This is on our website, our annual report and will soon be put up in all of our sites. The mission is promoted as the being the test in terms of our service at Positive East. The service/activity must contribute to the mission wealth of the charity for it be a valid activity for us.
We have developed 5 values through which we will be delivering or mission and they are:-
Proactive
Inclusive
Empathy
Integrity
Empowerment
We are in the process of developing these so that there can be a shared understanding of what we mean by our values.
We seek to actualise the mission through the following objectives:-
a)maximise the ability of people living with and affected by HIV infection to live independently, well and to prevent the further escalation of their needs
b)support people to overcome cultural and linguistic barriers to accessing services through the provision of information, advice and advocacy ensuring that their needs are met
c)support individuals to build their self-esteem, assertiveness and confidence enabling them to have control over their lives, make informed choices and live well with the virus. This work also involves supporting people into education and employment
d)advocate on behalf of clients with statutory and voluntary sector providers and commissioners of such services to ensure accessible, appropriate (cultural and linguistic),high quality services are available that effectively meet the needs of communities affected by HIV.
e)prevent the transmission of HIV infection through innovative and culturally sensitive, community based interventions |

Positive East is in the process of establishing Service Fora to support the ongoing development and improvement of services. We will be establishing 3 Service User Fora which feed into an overview steering group made up of representatives from the three fora. The overview steering group will support and guide the work of the fora. This group will also have an overview and scrutiny function within the charity. This means that the group will be asked questions by the Management Team and Board of Trustees on development issues and also will carry out Scrutiny of the particular services reporting back to the Management and Board of Trustees.
We are also in early stage of discussion in linking this new strcuture with the clinic based PPI structures which will give a coordinated appaorach accross the whole of North East London.
We are hoping to have started implementing the strcuture by June/July 2006 |

| The charity is in the process of collecting names and email addresses so that we can start a regular e-newsletter. This will be placed on our website and will be posted to those people who do not have internet access. We are hoping to support this with a half yearly newsletter. The aim of this being to involve and inform service users in the work and developments of the charity |

| The charity is building on developing its outcome focused approach to service delivery. A good example of this is with our advice services where during 2005 we raised £300,000 for clients through supporting them making social security benefit and hardship payments. These monies made real positive changes to people's lives and we have collated case studies as can be seen in our annual report on our website www.positiveeast.org.uk that demonstrate this impact |

In all application packs for positions within the organisation, there is a background information document sent out. Although not referred to as PPI, or ‘patient friendly’ we outline the means (our service objectives) by which we engage with service users (SU’s) to work together to fulfill our mission statement.
Advice team – undertook a review of services in order to make accessibility to workers for clients easier.
Joint team meetings (African and Gay Men) – bi-monthly meetings held where teams can learn from each other in order to improve services and client experience
Team meetings – during meetings the effectiveness and value of services is discussed and the impact any proposed changes might make on our clients. This would be taken back to clients for them to have their input. For example:
• discussion around where a leaflet is to be distributed will happen at team level, as well as group/SU level and consensus reached
• ideas for programme of work to take place in support groups would initially come from SUs then be taken to team level for discussion and development.
